Gutter Cleaning Checklist for Houston Homeowners: Before & After Every Storm Season
Houston doesn't ease into storm season — it arrives fast, hits hard, and leaves behind a mess that can overwhelm even well-maintained gutters. With over 50 inches of annual rainfall, frequent tropical systems, and neighborhoods full of mature oak and pine trees, Houston homeowners face gutter challenges that most of the country never deals with. The good news: a simple before-and-after checklist can keep your gutter system performing at full capacity all year long. This is the exact inspection routine our team at Got Gutterz and Protection uses on thousands of Houston homes every year.
Why Houston Gutters Need Seasonal Attention
Most gutter maintenance guides are written for climates with four distinct seasons. Houston doesn't work that way. Our "storm season" effectively runs from May through October, with tropical systems capable of dropping 10–20 inches of rain in a matter of days. Outside of that window, winter cold fronts bring their own heavy rain events, and spring pollen season coats gutters with a sticky film that traps debris and accelerates clogging. The result: Houston gutters need inspection at minimum twice a year — ideally before storm season begins in late spring and again after the peak of hurricane season in October. Homes with heavy tree coverage (live oaks, pine trees, sweet gums) may need quarterly attention.
Before Storm Season: The Pre-Season Checklist
Complete this checklist every April or early May before Houston's storm season ramps up. First, clear all debris from gutters and downspouts — remove leaves, pine needles, seed pods, and any buildup from winter storms. Pay special attention to inside corners and downspout inlets where debris concentrates. Second, flush gutters with a garden hose from the high end toward each downspout. Water should flow freely with no pooling. Third, check downspout extensions — make sure they direct water at least 4–6 feet away from your foundation. In Houston's clay soil, water that pools near the foundation can cause serious structural damage within a single storm season. Fourth, inspect gutter hangers and fasteners. Houston's heat cycles cause metal to expand and contract, which can loosen screws and pull gutters away from the fascia over time. Any section that sags or pulls away needs to be re-secured before the first major storm. Fifth, look for rust, cracks, or separated seams. Sectional gutters are especially prone to joint failure. If you see daylight through a seam or rust staining on your fascia board, that section needs repair or replacement before storm season.
After a Major Storm: The Post-Storm Inspection
After any significant rain event — especially a tropical storm or hurricane — walk your property and check these items before the next storm arrives. Check for debris accumulation: heavy storms deposit large volumes of leaves, twigs, and roof granules in gutters very quickly. Even gutters that were clean before the storm can be fully blocked after a major event. Inspect downspout outlets at ground level. Look for erosion channels in the soil, which indicate water is overflowing rather than draining properly. Check fascia boards and soffits for water staining or soft spots — these are signs that gutters overflowed and water backed up behind the gutter. Look at the ground along your foundation line. Saturated soil or standing water within 3 feet of the foundation after a storm means your drainage system isn't moving water far enough away. Finally, check for any sections of gutter that shifted, pulled away, or collected standing water. Even a small amount of standing water in a gutter after a storm has passed indicates a low spot or blockage that needs to be corrected.
The One Upgrade That Eliminates Most of This Work
The single most effective thing a Houston homeowner can do to reduce gutter maintenance is install a quality micro-mesh gutter guard system. Our FloMaster Pro micro-mesh guards use a surgical-grade stainless steel mesh with openings small enough to block pine needles, shingle grit, and even the fine debris that standard screen guards let through. With FloMaster Pro installed, the pre-season and post-storm cleaning steps above are largely eliminated — debris sits on top of the mesh and blows off or washes away with rain rather than accumulating inside the gutter. The guards are backed by a 45-year no-clog warranty, and our installation is backed by a lifetime workmanship guarantee. For Houston homeowners who are tired of climbing ladders twice a year or paying for seasonal cleanings, it's the most cost-effective long-term solution available.
Warning Signs Your Gutters Can't Handle Houston Storms
If you notice any of the following, your gutter system needs professional attention before the next major storm: water overflowing the front edge of gutters during moderate rain (not just during extreme events), rust stains or green algae streaks on your home's exterior below the gutterline, paint peeling on fascia boards or soffits, soil erosion or mulch washing away from foundation beds after rain, cracks in your driveway or walkways near the foundation, or basement or crawl space moisture after heavy rain. These are not cosmetic issues — they are early indicators of water management failure that gets significantly more expensive to address the longer it goes unresolved.
